Reagan just had pups almost 3 weeks ago. She gained over 14 pounds and had just 2 pups, so now she is very overweight. Her old fat weight was around 49 pounds and I know she's over 50. Her delivery was fairly easy, she is in good health, but I would really like to get some of that weight off of her. Is it safe to start some light training now or should I wait?

Hmm I'm definately not the expert on this one, but I would say probably about the time you start weening the pups would be ideal.

you can start off by taking her for short walks at (about) 2-3 weeks post delivery. walking is basically a "low impact" work out, and therefore shouldn't be too strainful on her body, but the walks will help her to retone her muscles and help to lose the added weight.

My personal experience...
Gidget, my Miniature Pinscher, just had a litter of 5 on 2/23, which is huge for a little dog. She gained 3lbs during the pregnancy, but considering she is only 9lbs, that is 1/3 of her body weight. She raced in a flyball tournament on 2/14-2/15, ran a couple of races on 2/28-3/1, and has been back to agility and flyball training for two weeks now and started drag sledding again last week. She is back to her normal race time and will be running in a flyball tournament all weekend.
BTW, I pulled the pups off at 3 weeks and now at almost 5 weeks, they are eating ground raw (meat/bone) by itself. Once a day, I add in some Esbilac.
Gidget is already back at her preprego weight and fast has hell.

That's awesome!!! She was racing like 2 weeks before delivery? I think Reagan would have been lure racing if she could have the whole time. I wish I would have done a little more with her during the time. I kept hearing not to do much at all and feed, feed, feed her so I did. She normally weighs around 43-45 pounds, so she too gained 1/3 of her body weight, but with just two average size puppies. I am glad she didn't get super thin and bony though.

Do you have any pics of the sledding Pinscher?`

obviously the older the pups get, then the less she has to feed, take care of them, etc, and therefore can maintain the nutrients all for herself, build up her body, ...the more you can do with her and the harder you can work her. but i'd personally error on the side of caution and underdo it as oppose to over doing it.
