Dog lovers were out at the state Capitol Saturday to sign a petition against a ban on specific breeds in Minnesota.
Members of an organization called A Rotta Love Plus were out speaking on the steps of the Capitol and asking community members to sign a petition rejecting a bill banning specific dog breeds that are considered to be dangerous.
The bill, proposed by Rep. John Lesch, would ban Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Chow-chows, Wolf Hybrids and Akitas from Minnesota. It will be proposed February, 2008.
If passed, people who own these dogs would have to get rid of them or move out of the state.
Rachel Anderson, the director of A Rotta Love Plus and an owner of two Rottweilers and two Pit Bulls, said the bill punishes responsible owners.
"Any dog in the right hands normally turns out to be a nice dog and Pit Bulls are no exception," Anderson said. "As long as they've got good training, good leadership, a responsible owner, they're no different than any other dog."
Protesters said bad owners should be targeted, not specific breeds.
