New LA City Ordinance Could Be In Lubbock's Future
Posted: Feb 27, 2008 05:53 PM CST
A new city ordinance in Los Angeles, California could be in Lubbock's future after last night's dangerous dog public hearing.
The new ordinance in LA requires all pets be spayed or neutered by the time they're four months old or the owner could face a fine. However, licensed breeders could get a waiver to breed their animals.
Lubbock's Director of Animal Services, Kevin Overstreet says this idea is now in the hands of the Animal Services Board.
"They will review all those citizens comments from last night and make recommendations to the city council if they would strengthen Lubbock's current city ordinances," Overstreet said.
The idea came from Tuesday night's public hearing on dangerous dogs. That meeting revealed many Lubbock residents see the issue as a people problem, not a dog problem. Dozens voiced their opinion on the matter during last night's meeting at the civic center theater.
"Terrible dog attacks of recent weeks are a law enforcement and people problem, not a pit bull problem," one resident said.
While another said, "The neglect of animal control across the city is a ticking time bomb that has already exploded."
The meeting gave people the chance to let their opinions, concerns, and solutions be known to Lubbock's Animal Services board and to the Lubbock Board of Health. Those in attendance said they were pleased with the direction they feel meetings like this will take Lubbock.
The city plans to hold another public hearing on the dog issue, but it has not yet been scheduled. We'll of course bring you details on that meeting when it's scheduled.
