I am pleased to announce that the city of Edwardsville, KS repealed their pit bull ban this evening. In place of a breed ban, the city has enacted a breed-neutral dangerous dog ordinance largely modeled after that of Olathe, KS.
Getting the breed ban repealed and replaced with a law that provides better public safety has been quietly in the works for several months now thanks to a few KCDA members who worked behind the scenes with the Mayor and city staff. We apologize for the secrecy but the council felt it was best to quietly pass it.
In addition to KCDA members who worked on the repeal, we would also like to thank Edwardsville resident and animal advocate Debra Sweeten who attended the Canine Legislation Conference and subsequently met with the mayor to advocate for a repeal of the ban. And finally thank you to Dr Sheila Dodson who also work behind the scenes to guide the city staff and lend her expertise in convincing the council to improve their dog laws and to enforce it equally for all breeds.
Join us on April 19th for the KCDA Membership Meeting where we will discuss this success in greater detail including the work that lead up to the repeal.
Thank you all who made this possible!
