I will insert my expertness here, lol. Line breeding can be really good or really bad. Just like when you are trying to decide what two dogs to breed, you are looking for the best traits. If that happens to be in the same line, okay....

Line breeding can be a great way to reproduce desired traits and characteristics, but don't forget that's also the easiest way to reproduce many faults. And if someone has only a handfull of dogs in their yard then don't think that your are line breeding b/c after the 3rd breeding you will be back to inbreeding. To line breed effectively requires many dogs of the same lineage/pedigree or similar and also a great deal of time and patience to get the right formula/strain consistently.

Line breeding like other breeding is perfectly ok with healthy dogs. You need to know the pedigree health as well, not just that the parents are ok.
You don't always get defects with line breeding just like you don't always get good health with out crossing or even cross breeding for that matter.
With line (or inbreeding) you could be increasing your chances of producing pups with health issues, especially double recessive issues. Since it will be more likely for both parents to be carriers. On the other hand if you are breeding from to healthy parents from healthy pedigree then you will get healthy pups. They can't get problems that they don't have the genes for.
You might be more likely to not have recessive defects with out crossing but then the offspring can be carriers and problems pop up in later generations.
