Tomorrow we go before Dade County in an effort to reverse some of this...
read this. Today there were unconfirmed reports that a northern County in FL
decided to stop adopting out or rescuing certain breeds; Bull breeds
included.. Here is some info on House 101 and the State of FL.
Hey everyone. There's a very dangerous bill (House Bill 101) proposed for
Florida dogs in the works. Currently in the state of Florida, local govt's
are prohibited to pass laws against so called "dangerous" dogs. Miami-Dade
is the only county in Florida that has BSL (Breed Specific Legislation)
because state legislators from Miami-Dade threatened to not pass other
important FL legislation unless their BSL was permitted to be
"grandfathered" in. In essence our county blackmailed the rest of the state
to get its way. Well, House Bill 101 (HB 101) proposes to eliminate the
prohibition against BSL statewide making it legal throughout every city and
county in Florida to pass BSL laws...putting all dogs at risk!!
Anyone who owns ANY breed of dog be it a bully breed, rottweiler, German
shepherd, Dobie, etc...needs to take action against this bill. Right now
it's pit bulls and/or any bully breed or mixed bully breed in Miami-Dade
County; tomorrow it could be rottweilers; akitas; german shepherds; golden
retrievers; etc.
Dem. Rep Perry Thurston is the bill's author, his territory is Broward
County. So people in Broward in particular but really the entire state need
to take action in writing him as well as your individual representatives
expressing their views on why this bill is dangerous and undesirable. We
have until January to get all of our letters into our representative's
hands. Please don't wait until then, it will be too late. Our Reps work for
us, we need to show them what we want! We DO NOT WANT this bill to even be
introduced for consideration of a vote.
Below are links to the bill, the bill itself in the event the link fails,
and a link to find your local representative. Additionally the Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS) sent its own letter to Rep. Thurston and
attached is a copy of it. Please do not plagiarize their letter but use its
contents for talking points and style. Angry constituents often go unheard;
firm, responsible, educated reasoning backed up with concrete science and
data do.
Please take a moment soon to educate yourself, find your representative(s),
and send your own communication to your legislator(s) and cc: Jennifer
Hobgood @ the HSUS' regional office in Tallahassee whose address is on the
attached letterhead at bottom. Thank you.
