ATLANTA (AP) - A bill that toughens the penalties for dog fighting in Georgia is on its way to Governor Sonny Perdue.
The legislation received final passage in the state Senate on Friday by a unanimous vote of 44 to 0.
Under the bill, it would be a felony to engage in dogfighting. The legislation would also make it a crime to attend dogfights and to breed the animals for fighting.
Animal rights activists have been pushing for years to change Georgia's laws, which they say are among the weakest in the nation. They faced opposition from some rural lawmakers who worry it could restrict hunting dogs.
The effort gained fresh momentum this session after Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to participating in a brutal dog fighting ring.
The final bill that passed on Friday stripped a provision that would have required that dogs picked up in dog fighting probes be spayed or neutered.
Perdue, a dog owner, has not said whether he'll sign the bill. But in a December news conference he called Vick's actions "heinous."
