Sen. Rosalind Kurita announced Thursday morning that her bill giving counties with a population more than 105,000 the ability to adopt their own ordinances to send pet attack cases to general sessions court passed the Senate.
Kurita introduced the "permissive legislation" in an attempt to hold pet owners more accountable if their pet escapes and attacks another person and causes serious injury.
Currently, such cases are sent to circuit court, where the maximum fine is $50, she said.
The bill passed unanimously by a vote of 30-0.
