Maker Of Tainted Dog Food To Pay $3.1M Aflatoxin Problem Not Related To Chinese Ingredients February 08
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A plaintiffs' attorney said a Missouri company will pay out $3.1 million to pet owners after making contaminated pet food that killed dozens of dogs nationwide.
Jim Andrews, who represents a Tennessee family that sued, said the company will set up a fund to reimburse pet owners for the loss of their dog, veterinarian bills and the cost of any unreturned contaminated food.
Diamond Pet Foods' South Carolina plant produced the food, which contained a mold called aflatoxin. The company issued a recall after a veterinarian linked a dog's death to the food in 2005. There's no link between Diamond Pet Foods and the 2006 recall of tainted Chinese pet food.
In the settlement, the company says it did nothing illegal. But Diamond Pet Foods acknowledges workers at the plant didn't follow internal testing procedures.
The Food and Drug Administration released a report showing the company has no record of test results for 12 shipments of corn in 2005, when the tainted grain slipped in.
